Specially commissioned art piece by Divya Marie Kato celebrating the strength of spirit of the millions of women and refugees around the world, who’ve had lives uprooted due to conflict and who continue to dream of a brighter future.
“What do you put your trust in?”
The painting grew from this question.
Following a discussion with Jane Best, Executive Director of Refugees International Japan, where she shared stories, articles and inspiration from RIJ projects, this quote stayed with me:
“Trust us and we’ll surprise you.”
During the weeks that followed, I reflected on what I trust and reached out to friends and family asking what they put their trust in:
“The Universe… Instinct… Higher Self… Love… Compassion…”
In times of trouble, we all put our trust in something. Something that inspires healing and hope.
Whatever that may be, for you or me, sometimes it is only this that helps us look up and put one foot in front of the other.
As for dragons, they’re all about our most powerful gift
From cave walls to the blank pages of a sketchbook, our ability to imagine and express, through the universal language of art, helps us communicate, bring ideas to life and most importantly, process and heal.
In this way, to me, there’s nothing more hopeful than a dragon.
The enduring myths that surround dragons, testify to what it is that helps us keep these dreams alive – our most innovative, hopeful and powerful gift: imagination.

Notes On Colour
Research into hope, opportunity and independence, led me in different directions.
I began exploring blindness and braille and the reflections of Helen Keller and trailblazer, Chieko Asakawa, who has revolutionised possibilities for blind people through technology.
Looking up the word ‘trust’ in braille, which reminded me of constellations, took me on a visit to our local planetarium.
I sat engulfed in darkness feeling, I imagined, as my ancestors would have done. How long we’ve been staring up at the sky, hope mixed with wonder, at the vastness – at the known and unknown.
“Out of the night that covers me, black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be, for my unconquerable soul.”
– Invictus, William Ernest Henley

Show support for all those who, just like us, continue to look up at the sky with hope
